NPP Presidential Primaries: Run-off or Outright Win? Breaking Down the Regional Trends of the NPP Primaries

Accra, Ghana – January 31, 2026 – The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is on the edge of its seat tonight as results from its crucial Presidential Primaries begin to trickle in. After a day of intense voting across all 275 constituencies, the party is now awaiting the verdict that will determine its flagbearer for the upcoming general election. The atmosphere is thick with anticipation, as it appears to be a much tighter race than many initially predicted.

The Big Three: A Battle for Supremacy

The contest has largely narrowed down to three prominent figures:

• Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia: Widely considered the frontrunner, Dr. Bawumia's campaign has been built on his strong economic credentials and his role as Vice President.

• Kennedy Agyapong: The maverick MP for Assin Central, Mr. Agyapong has run an energetic campaign, often positioning himself as the voice of the grassroots and a refreshing alternative.

• Dr. Bryan Acheampong: The Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr. Acheampong, has also made a notable impact, particularly in his home region.

Provisional Results: A Shifting Landscape

As of early evening, provisional results from polling stations across the country indicate a highly competitive race, particularly between Dr. Bawumia and Kennedy Agyapong.

Initial reports suggest Dr. Bawumia is performing strongly in the Northern Regions, which were expected to be his strongholds. However, Kennedy Agyapong is showing surprising strength in the Central and Western Regions, and crucially, is giving Dr. Bawumia a serious challenge in the vote-rich Ashanti Region. This makes the Ashanti Region the ultimate battleground, with its results likely to dictate whether a candidate can secure the crucial 50% + 1 vote needed to win outright in the first round.

What Happens Next?

The focus now shifts to the national collation center, where the Electoral Commission (EC) is diligently working to verify and announce the official results.

• No Outright Winner Yet: It remains to be seen if any candidate can cross the 50% threshold tonight. If not, the NPP will head into a run-off between the top two contenders, setting the stage for an even more intense second phase of the primaries.

• Security and Order: Despite the high stakes, the voting process has been largely peaceful across the country, thanks to a strong security presence at polling and collation centers. A minor incident at Odorkor Saleria Basic 1 & 2 (Ablekuma North) was quickly contained by police, ensuring the integrity of the process.

The coming hours will be critical as Ghana watches closely to see who will lead the NPP into the next general election. The stage is set for a dramatic conclusion to what has been a truly captivating primary election.
