Flood Crisis: Death Toll Rises to 4 in Ga Central Municipality


A relentless 15-hour torrential rainstorm, which commenced on the 29th June around 11 pm and continued on the 30th June 2026, has pushed the infrastructure of the Ga Central Municipality past its limits, leaving a trail of destruction and heartbreak.


Key Updates & Fatalities


Tragically, as emergency teams conduct ongoing assessments, the confirmed death toll has risen to four (4):

  • Nii Okaiman East: One (1) female victim
  • Santa Maria Drug Store Area: One (1) female victim
  • Kwashiebu: Two (2) young male victims, died through electrocution when they tried to dewater a neighbour’s house using electric water pump.


Additionally, approximately 1,811 individuals have been displaced across the municipality, with the highest numbers recorded in Auntie Aku, Santa Maria, and Anyaa West.


Infrastructure & Financial Impact

The financial toll is currently estimated at GH₵ 1,042,563 due to widespread structural failures:

  • Roads: 30% of roads are damaged, including a major collapse of the underground supporting soil on the Santa Maria Jah Love Road network.
  • Buildings: 70% of structures sustained damage, including the total collapse of a four-storey building in Nii Okaiman West (no casualties from the collapse itself).
  • Power: Severe outages left residents from Olebu Ablekuma to Santa Maria without electricity for hours. A Gas tank at Agape Pentecost Junction, belonging to a gas filling station has collapsed into an eroded main drain nearby.


Root Causes & Urgent Action


Data from the "SITUATIONAL REPORT 29th June.docx" highlights that massive blockages in the primary drain from Olebu Ablekuma to Santa Maria—coupled with illegal structures built directly on waterways—severely restricted stormwater flow.


To prevent future catastrophes, NADMO urges immediate action:


 1. Demolish illegal structures blocking natural waterways.

 2. Construct an upgraded storm drain at Awoshie Lane 5 to link with existing infrastructure.

 3. Desilt the entire municipal drainage system immediately.
