Building Disaster Resilience Early: St. Sylvanus R/C School’s Immersive Learning Experience at NADMO Headquarters
Empowering the next generation with practical safety knowledge is one of the most effective ways to build a resilient society. Today, the team at Vungton Multimedia had the privilege of witnessing and capturing an inspiring educational simulation exercise at the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) Headquarters, featuring enthusiastic pupils and teachers from St. Sylvanus R/C School, Pokuase.
An Immersive Journey into Search and Rescue
The visit was designed to give students a firsthand look at the operational realities of disaster management and emergency response. Rather than relying solely on classroom theory, the young learners were taken on an interactive journey through the inner workings of an operational Search and Rescue (SAR) mission.
NADMO officers walked the children and their teachers through the complete lifecycle of an emergency response—from distress call coordination to field deployment. Students observed how command centers operate, gaining a deeper appreciation for the swift, coordinated action required during crises.
Hands-On Equipment Demonstration
One of the highlights of the visit was the detailed display and demonstration of essential rescue gear. Officers broke down the practical uses of critical field equipment, ensuring the children understood the function of items such as:
a) Life Jackets: Demonstrating water safety and aquatic rescue protocols.
b) Chainsaws: Highlighting how heavy-duty tools are safely utilized to clear debris and blocked access routes during storms or structural hazards.
c) Emergency Body Bags and Specialized Gear: Explaining the rigorous protocols followed during high-stakes recovery operations.
A specialized saw used for cutting through concrete materials for rescue was also displayed.
In addition to static displays, officers demonstrated the correct ways to wear specialized personal protective equipment (PPE) and gave students a close-up look at NADMO’s frontline operational pickup vehicles.
Inspiring Future Changemakers
The atmosphere throughout the headquarters was electric. Both pupils and teachers expressed profound excitement and deep gratitude for the warm, engaging reception provided by the NADMO team. Experiences like this bridge the gap between public safety agencies and the communities they serve, planting seeds of civic responsibility, safety awareness, and potential future careers in public service among young minds.
